Leipzig University is a traditional, comprehensive university with a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines. The Faculty of Medicine, the second oldest Medical Faculty of Germany, is one of the largest research institutions of the State of Saxony and maintains close links to the faculties of science of the University, the Max-Planck-Institutes situated in Leipzig as well as the Research Centre of Environmental Science Leipzig-Halle.
UL group joins researchers with extensive experience in biology of low dose irradiation, in biology of endothelial cells, of dendritic and T-cells and biology of primary skin cells providing all necessary skills and techniques to perform the intended experiments. The Group's laboratories are fully equipped for all standard cellular and molecular biology procedures with specialised facilities for cell and tissue culture; cytology, histology and immunohistochemistry; electron, fluorescence and confocal microscopy; flow cytometry and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, gene expression (Affymetrix core unit) and protein biochemistry.
UL is involved in projects funded by the European Commission (NOTE-IP, FI6R, 036465) and in projects funded by the German research foundation (DFG).
Role of participant in research activities:
Investigation of radiation induced pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic changes in endothelial cells which may contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular radiation injury at high or low dose rates. Especially radiation induced effects on leukocyte adhesion, cytokine release, membrane permeability and pro-thrombotic surface proteins will be addressed.
Responsible scientists:
Prof. Dr. med. G. Hildebrandt is deputy head of the Department of Radiation Oncology and head of the Radiobiological Laboratory. He has long-term experience in investigations of low/moderate dose radiation effects on inflammation (chronic, acute) in different species (human, rabbit, rat, mice) in vitro, and in vivo.
Staff members:
Dr. rer.-nat. Annegret Glasow, a research biochemist with profound experience in ligand/receptor binding studies, laser capture microdissection, promoter CpG island investigations using bisulfite modification, GST pull-down protein interaction assays, protein and RNA-analysis which she gained as research assistant at different institutions of the University of Leipzig (1994-1999), and as postdoctoral scientist on an EU Research Training Network grant at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), Section of Haematological Oncology, London, UK (2000-2005).
Dr. rer.-nat. Jutta Jahns, and Dipl.-Biol. I. Patties are research biologist with profound experience in immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence/FACS, protein kinetics, and functional
